Families impacted by disaster consist of the largest and most longterm effected group. We will examine the results of these tragedies, how the human spirit continuously strives to overcome, and what we can do better in the future to prepare communities for longterm displacement.

About Ken Beach

A combat veteran and former first responder, Ken was raised and lived in California in the 1980''s through the 1990''s. He experienced first hand the devistation of the Northridge Earthquak of 1989 and the Rodney King Riots of 1991. He served in the U.S. Army as Military Police from 2000 to 2008, during which time he deployed to Mosul, Iraq in 2006. Ken viewed combat through the lens of a community police officer, pulling back the veils of human suffering on a wide scale and observing how families and communities learn to adapt to upheaval, displacement, and tragedy. During Ken''s volunteer work at homeless shelters he encountered and interviewed survivors of Hurricane Katrina, who were displaced and living in El Paso, TX. In 2009 he fought alongside firefighters and crews against the spicewood, TX brush fire. It was the culmination of these experiences that led to the birth of Family Disaster Prep during his MBA studies.
